DESAM to receive Federal Grant for Apprenticeship program.

U.S. Department of Labor awards more than $2.2 million to assist dislocated workers through expanded partnerships with Registered Apprenticeship

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today awarded $2,212,751 to assist state apprenticeship agencies in the development of strategies to better serve dislocated workers and other unemployed individuals through expanded partnerships with the Registered Apprenticeship system, which is administered by the department's Employment and Training Administration.

"Today's funding will help state apprenticeship agencies strengthen partnerships between the Registered Apprenticeship and the public workforce systems," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Agencies will create strategies to jointly train and prepare dislocated workers and other unemployed individuals for careers in growing industries, including those related to green technologies."

Registered Apprenticeship is an 'earn while you learn' model that provides a combination of on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by joint employer and labor groups, individual employers and/or employer associations. Currently the national Registered Apprenticeship system includes a network of approximately 30,000 program sponsors nationwide, offering more than 1,000 different career opportunities.

The grants announced today will help support states as they modernize their infrastructure, policies, rules and legislation to advance apprenticeship into the 21st century. Funding also will assist states in upgrading data systems to promote increased economic analysis and data sharing between the Registered Apprenticeship and public workforce systems, as well as expand assistance to dislocated workers.

Twenty-two state apprenticeship agencies and the National Association of State and Territorial Apprenticeship Directors (NASTAD) are receiving funding under this effort.

Lexington's TRANE to offer new product.

June 24 was a day to celebrate at the TCS manufacturing facility in Lexington, Ky., as the first Performance Climate Changer™ air handler rolled off the line. Employees, state and local officials, Lexington business leaders and the Trane leadership team gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony marking this milestone in Trane history.

Plan to Ship 600 Units a Month

Dave Magner, general manager of the Lexington facility, thanked employees for their hard work in getting to this point. He said that while this was a day to celebrate, it was just the beginning. "We have a very aggressive ramp-up schedule. Two units will ship in June. By December, we plan to ship 600 units per month. We have a lot of work ahead of us."

Larry Hayes, secretary, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, said Trane was to be commended on its new air handler, but that the "real story is the investment that Trane has made in the facility to produce this new air handler. You have to earn that investment.

"Labor and management took an aggressive approach to work together," he added. "In a time when we're getting a lot of bad new across the state, you've earned that investment."

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry, who toured the plant before the ceremony, echoed those sentiments. "I've seen absolutely, overwhelmingly impressive things in the plant today. I can't tell you how excited I am about the future of this facility and the future of Trane in general. When Trane does well, Lexington does well," said Newberry.

Newberry also thanked Lexington employees for their commitment to the community. Referring to the hundreds of volunteer hours that Trane employees contribute to organizations such at the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Race for the Cure and the Salvation Army, Newberry said, "I appreciate what you do for our community. It is what makes Lexington a special place to call home. Trane is truly a major success story."

John Conover, TCS president, Americas, also spoke at the ceremony, noting that Trane has an important position in the global green movement. Buildings are the biggest users of energy, and HVAC systems account for about 40 percent of a building's energy consumption and 70 percent of electricity consumption, he pointed out.

The Performance Climate Changer™ Air Handler

The Performance Climate Changerä is one of a new line of Trane air handlers, designed with input from over 1,000 customers and a significant investment in manufacturing technologies. The Trane Performance Climate Changer air handler is designed with much of the flexibility and features of a custom air handler, but utilizes pre-engineered components to reduce cost and construction schedules, while providing tested performance. This highly flexible unit is designed to provide a clean, comfortable environment in commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.

The Performance Climate Changer air handlers meet the strictest of industry standards and are the most energy-efficient cataloged unit in the industry, minimizing energy and operating costs. With innovative casing design, factory-installed controls and a menu of advanced, energy-saving options, these air handlers clean, filter, dehumidify, and heat and cool air, playing a key role in a high-performance building HVAC system.
